The Illustrious History of Sound and Recording in Montreal in the Twentieth Century

RCA Victor: Good-bye to a Legendary Studio

Salle A du Studio Victor

Jean Leloup was the last artist to record an album there. In its nearly 70 year existence, it was the source of recordings of the likes of Oscar Peterson, Maureen Forester, Ariane Moffat, les Cowboys fringants, Dumas, Daniel Bélanger, to name but a few. At the end of December, Studio Victor closed its doors for good.  Marie-France Abastado has retraced its story with testimonials from some of the people who worked there. They all hope there is still a future for this iconic recording studio.

Built during the 1940s in Montreal, this place acquired a reputation that flourished well beyond the boundaries of our city, not only because of its unusual architecture, but also because the recordings made inside its walls included many styles of music performed and sung by some of the greatest artists.  However, in the face of a severe decline in the profitability of the record industry, Studio Victor was no longer economically viable.

The complete report can be found (in French) at the website of Radio-Canada.
