{"id":1519,"date":"2021-04-01T12:55:42","date_gmt":"2021-04-01T16:55:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/moeb.ca\/hesm\/compo-records\/"},"modified":"2022-05-29T11:45:45","modified_gmt":"2022-05-29T15:45:45","slug":"compo-studio-1925-1953","status":"publish","type":"hesm","link":"https:\/\/moeb.ca\/en\/hsrm\/compo-studio-1925-1953\/","title":{"rendered":"Compo Studio (1925 &#8211; 1953)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During the course of its 40 odd years of existence, the <em>Compo Company <\/em>recorded many Canadian artists; under its own <em>Compo<\/em> label, but also under the <em>Apex<\/em> label.&nbsp; In 1925, when the <em>Starr Piano Co<\/em>. ended its recording activities, <em>Compo<\/em> took over the <em>Starr<\/em> name and continued to use it until 1953.&nbsp; Starting in the early 1930\u2019s, <em>Compo<\/em> also began a long association with <em>Decca Records<\/em>.&nbsp; Among the artists that benefited from H. S. Berliner&#8217;s expertise and that of his staff, which included Robert Chislett and John Bradley, were such greats as Mary Travers (La Bolduc), J. O. La Madeleine, Isidore Soucy, Rex Battle, Paul Dufault, Rodolphe Plamondon and Don Messer and his Islanders, as well as singers Eug\u00e8ne Daignault, Ovila L\u00e9gar\u00e9, Charles Marchand and Marcel Martel.<\/p>\n<p>It is worth mentioning that <em>Compo<\/em> was the first Canadian company to produce in 1924 electrically-made pressings, long before Victor or Columbia. Twenty years later, it would again beat the latter to the punch by producing the first records made of <em>Vinylite<\/em>, predating Columbia\u2019s use of it for their LPs by 4 years.<\/p>\n<h2>Compo Studio (1921- c.1970)<\/h2>\n<p><em>Compo <\/em>Studio opened its doors at 117 Metcalfe Street in July 1921, where it proceeded to launch the <em>Apex<\/em> label.&nbsp; Kept at the forefront of technological developments by its owner, H. S. Berliner, <em>Compo<\/em> soon distinguished itself in the field of sound recording.&nbsp; For one thing, in 1924, it made the first electrical recordings in Canada.&nbsp; The following year, it innovated once again by being the first to get involved in recording directly from radio broadcasts. In 1929, this involvement would lead H.S.
