{"id":1535,"date":"2021-05-01T14:28:43","date_gmt":"2021-05-01T18:28:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/moeb.ca\/hesm\/rca-victor-studio-1929-c-1980\/"},"modified":"2025-06-03T10:45:52","modified_gmt":"2025-06-03T14:45:52","slug":"rca-victor-studio-1929-1975","status":"publish","type":"hesm","link":"https:\/\/moeb.ca\/en\/hsrm\/rca-victor-studio-1929-1975\/","title":{"rendered":"RCA Victor Studio (1929- 1975)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 1929, the <em>Radio Corporation of America<\/em> (RCA) merged with the <em>Victor Talking Machine<\/em> <em>Company of Canada <\/em>which then became <em>RCA Victor<\/em>.\u00a0 It was thus in the <em>RCA Victor<\/em> studio that scores of works were recorded, in the 1930s and 1940s, on the <em>Victor <\/em>and <em>Bluebird <\/em>labels.\u00a0 In 1942, the company moved into a brand new studio, at 1050 Lacasse Street.\u00a0 This facility was the first in Canada ever to use formal acoustical treatment in its construction.\u00a0 Its design was created in the<em> RCA<\/em> labs in Camden, New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p>Following the lead of the Berliner family, the <em>RCA Victor<\/em> studio continued to record numerous Canadian\u2019s artists, both English and French.\u00a0 The studio also developed an interest in a variety of musical styles \u2013 folk, country and classical music, choirs, chamber music, jazz and others \u2013 and didn\u2019t hesitate to go on the road to capture exceptional performances. \u00a0Such was the case in 1941, when a choir and orchestra led by Wilfrid Pelletier was recorded in St-Laurent.<\/p>\n<p>In 1958, RCA Victor closed its Lacasse Street studio. After moving from Lacasse Street, the studio moved to 2195 Crescent Street.<\/p>\n<p>In 1959, after completing university studies and acquiring knowledge in acoustics and electronics, Roger B\u00e9lair was hired by Eddy Traynor, manager of the RCA Victor studio, to work as a recording technician.<\/p>\n<p>In 1960, he moved to 1241 Guy Street, before settling around 1967 at 910 de La Gaucheti\u00e8re Street, still in Montreal. At the time, Lionel Parent was the chief sound engineer, and the studio had a three-track Ampex recorder. At the time, the profession was called a &#8220;sound engineer.&#8221; Mr. B\u00e9lair then replaced Harry Bragg, an English-speaking technician who had recorded several RCA artists with Marcel Leblanc, the artistic director. In 1965, Michel \u00c9thier joined the company, and the studio acquired a four-track recording machine.<\/p>\n<p>In 1967, this studio was replaced by a complex built for Expo 67 and located on La Gaucheti\u00e8re Street. It included three recording studios and a record mastering studio. It was equipped with two live reverb chambers and an electronic reverb system.
