{"id":1816,"date":"2021-10-01T14:15:19","date_gmt":"2021-10-01T18:15:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/moeb.ca\/hesm\/an-industry-in-transition-the-digital-era\/"},"modified":"2022-02-11T10:36:17","modified_gmt":"2022-02-11T15:36:17","slug":"an-industry-in-transition-the-digital-era","status":"publish","type":"hesm","link":"https:\/\/moeb.ca\/en\/hsrm\/an-industry-in-transition-the-digital-era\/","title":{"rendered":"An industry in transition; the digital era"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 1981, <em>Sony<\/em> introduced its first Pulse-Code-Modulation (PCM) recorders: the PCM-F10 and the portable PCM-F1 digital audio recorders.&nbsp; These reasonably priced machines allowed the recording of digital audio on any standard videotape format, from Beta to VHS to U-matic.&nbsp; Other systems, including the processes developed by <em>Decca<\/em> and <em>Soundstream<\/em> had preceded them, but the technology was proprietary and prohibitively expensive.&nbsp; Later, <em>Sony<\/em> introduced several refinements in the PCM-701ESD (1983); the PCM-601ESD (1985) and the PCM-501-ESD (1987).&nbsp; These machines became instantly obsolete when the Digital Audio Tape (DAT) recorder was introduced in 1987. The DAT machine, at a cost of about $7,000 compared to about $30,000 for a tape recorder, soon after spelled the end of the analogue tape recorder as well. 1989 saw the introduction of multi-track digital tape recorders by <em>Sony<\/em> and <em>Studer<\/em>.&nbsp; Although these machines could record up to 48-tracks, they were prohibitively expensive and not many were sold.<\/p>\n<p>A short time later, so-called Modular Digital Multi-track recorders (MDMs) were introduced, first the ADAT by <em>Alesis<\/em> and <em>Fostex<\/em>, which could record 8 tracks of digital audio on VHS video cassettes, and shortly thereafter the DA-88 by <em>Tascam<\/em>, which used a smaller cassette.&nbsp; A number of these small inexpensive machines could be synchronized together, thus creating 24, 34 or even 64-tracks.&nbsp; This spelled the end of the new digital multi-tracks, as well as that of the venerable 24-track analogue recorder, which had been a studio mainstay for 20 years.&nbsp; Because these machines could also be synchronized to pictures, they revolutionized the film business as well.&nbsp; Being relatively inexpensive, they also gave rise to a new phenomenon that would change the face of the recording industry dramatically \u2013 the home studio.<\/p>\n<p>At about the same time, computer-based digital audio editing systems began to appear.&nbsp; These would revolutionize audio editing for both music and film.&nbsp; Computer programmes such as \u201cSound Designer\u201d by <em>Digidesign<\/em>, \u201cDyaxsis\u201d by <em>Studer\/Editech<\/em> and \u201cSonic Solutions\u201d enabled an editor to change and modify his editing without fear of destroying the original.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 1981, Sony introduced its first Pulse-Code-Modulation (PCM) recorders: the PCM-F10 and the portable PCM-F1 digital audio recorders.&nbsp; These reasonably priced machines allowed the recording of digital audio on any standard videotape format, from Beta to VHS to U-matic.&nbsp; Other systems, including the processes developed by Decca and Soundstream had preceded them, but the technology [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":1821,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_genesis_hide_title":false,"_genesis_hide_breadcrumbs":false,"_genesis_hide_singular_image":false,"_genesis_hide_footer_widgets":false,"_genesis_custom_body_class":"","_genesis_custom_post_class":"","_genesis_layout":"","ngg_post_thumbnail":0},"categories":[],"class_list":{"0":"post-1816","1":"hesm","2":"type-hesm","3":"status-publish","4":"has-post-thumbnail","6":"entry"},"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Histoire de l\u2019Enregistrement Sonore \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al \u2013 Technologie, Studios et Pionniers | MOEB<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"Exposition d\u00e9taill\u00e9e sur l\u2019histoire de l\u2019enregistrement sonore \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al : inventions d\u2019Emile et Herbert Berliner, premiers studios canadiens, techniques d\u2019enregistrement, avanc\u00e9es \u00e9lectriques et magn\u00e9tiques.
