In Spring 2024 the Musée was fortunate to receive a donation of over 60 books and periodicals from Richard Green, pictured here with Musée director, Anja Borck. The books cover a wide range of music history, discography, recorded sound history and preservation. Along with back issues of the journals of the International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives (IASA) and the American based Association for Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC), they represent a significant addition to our library holdings.
The donated books are in process to be included in the catalogue of the Tracy, Todd and Oliver Berliner Library and accessible for research purposes at the Musée des ondes Emile Berliner.
Richard Green retired from Library and Archives Canada in 2014 after serving as Manager of the Music Section and Head of Recorded Sound. Among his achievements was the creation of LAC’s Virtual Gramophone web site (Virtual Gramophone: Canadian Historical Sound Recordings). Launched in 1998, it was one of the first to document Canadian historical sound recordings. He was on the IASA Executive Board for nine years and President from (2005-2008). He received their Award of Recognition in 2013 for his ongoing contributions to the sound archiving community and exemplary service to IASA. Early in his career he worked for Treble Clef in Ottawa and Sam the Record Man in the Toronto area. He has spoken and written widely on discography and recorded sound collections with a particular interest in Canadian 78-rpm recordings.
This is the first of what the Musée hopes will be several installments from Mr. Green’s personal collections of books and original documents dealing with recorded sound in Canada.
